Why electrical estimators use it

Three things that
cost you every tender.

Electrical estimates fail the same way every time. It's not that the main scope is wrong — it's the fixture count delta, the addendum you didn't see, and the compliance item the drawing set never mentioned.

01 · Addenda

The addendum that landed at 4pm Friday.

Tenders on EstimateOne regularly get addenda issued in the 48 hours before close. Cable tray revisions, luminaire spec changes, switchboard configuration updates — the kind of change that's 3 pages buried in a 140-page reissue. If you don't catch it before the quote locks, it's yours to absorb.

$2,000–$8,000 per missed addendum · commercial fitout
02 · Schedule mismatches

The fixture schedule that disagrees with the plan.

Fixture schedules and electrical plans are authored separately. In practice, 31% of commercial tenders show a count discrepancy between the two. When that discrepancy is in your favour, the builder keeps it. When it's against you, you absorb it. TradeScope catches every delta before you price.

31% of commercial tenders have a fixture count mismatch
03 · Compliance scope

AS/NZS 3000 items the drawing never shows.

Emergency luminaires, RCD protection groupings, switchboard penetration fire stopping, surge protection requirements — these are compliance obligations the AS/NZS 3000 mandates regardless of what's on the drawing. They show up post-contract as variation requests that go nowhere. TradeScope prompts every one of them at quote time.

AS/NZS 3000 compliance items missed = $1,500–$6,000 per average commercial job

Compliance intelligence · Electrical

AS/NZS 3000 to
every line item.

Every scope item in an electrical quote is cross-checked against the actual Australian standards. Not a rebranded US library. The real AS/NZS references, updated when the standards update.

Standards that govern electrical quoting

Wiring + installation
  • AS/NZS 3000Wiring Rules — electrical installations. The primary reference for every residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installation in AU/NZ. Covers circuit protection, earthing, wiring methods, switchboards, testing.
  • AS/NZS 3008Electrical installations — selection of cables. Governs cable sizing calculations — current capacity, voltage drop, fault current. Wrong cable sizing = AS/NZS 3000 non-compliance.
  • AS/NZS 3017Electrical installations — verification guidelines. Sets the inspection and testing regime required after installation — continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, RCD response. Generates the compliance certificate.
  • AS/NZS 3012Electrical installations — construction and demolition sites. Mandatory for any site power setup — distribution boards, RCD requirements, residual current device grouping.
Energy + emergency
  • AS/NZS 2293Emergency escape lighting and exit signs. Mandates maintained emergency circuits, battery backup duration, test intervals, and test records — a scope item often missing from electrical tenders.
  • NCC Section JEnergy efficiency — lighting power density, sub-metering requirements for buildings over 2,500m². Frequently absent from early electrical scope where NCC class isn't specified.

Governing bodies + state licensing

National bodies
  • Standards Australia — issues AS/NZS 3000 series. Last update: AS/NZS 3000:2018 (Amendment 2, 2022).
  • NECA — National Electrical & Communications Association. Industry peak body for electrical contractors.
  • Master Electricians Australia. Training, compliance guidance, IR representation.
  • ACMA — Australian Communications & Media Authority. Registers cabling providers for telecommunications cabling endorsement.
State licensing gates
  • QLD — QBCC Electrical Contractor Licence. Mandatory for all electrical contracting work. QBCC also issues fire alarm installer licences.
  • NSW — Service Provider (Electrical Contractor) Licence, NSW Fair Trading. Separate licence classes for building wiring, airconditioning, refrigeration.
  • VIC — Energy Safe Victoria — REC (Registered Electrical Contractor). Separate Victorian electrical safety requirements under the Electricity Safety Act 1998.
  • WA — Building & Energy — Electrical Contractor Licence. Separate regime with WA-specific worker licensing requirements.
  • SA — Consumer and Business Services — Electrical Contractor Licence.
Industry associations
  • ECA (Electrical Contractors Association) — state-based, equivalent function to NECA in some states.
  • NABERS — relevant for energy sub-metering compliance on commercial electrical tenders.
When AS/NZS 3000 updates, TradeScope updates. Amendment 2 (2022) changed the RCD protection requirements for general purpose outlets in residential dwellings. Every electrical quote in TradeScope picked up the new grouping rule the same week — without anyone manually editing a compliance library.
